Timber buildings higher than four storeys will be built in the Czech Republic too

High-rise buildings made of timber are a growing trend abroad. Entire districts are being built with timber apartment buildings, schools, kindergartens, sports halls, administrative and public buildings. Investors choose timber as the main construction material because of its environmental friendliness and sustainability. In the Czech Republic, the greater development of timber buildings has so far been hampered by unfinished legislation that did not allow buildings to be built higher than four storeys, i.e. 12 metres fire height. Out of a jointly declared need to change the legislative restrictions, the Platform for Sustainable Timber Construction we initiated together with Prodesi/Domesi, an architectural and construction company focusing on timber buildings and other companies.

"As the initiators of the professional Platform for Sustainable Construction from timber, we are pleased that our joint actions contribute to make the ecological construction of timber buildings a common practice in the Czech Republic, as it is the case in Austria and Germany," says Josef Wiedermann, Managing Director of UBM Development Czechia, and adds: "We are pleased that the joint intensive work of all stakeholders has succeeded in moving Czech standards towards modern environmentally friendly construction. The possibility to build taller multi-storey timber buildings, which are faster to construct thanks to prefabrication and have a significantly lower carbon footprint, will contribute to the massive development of this type of housing. After our Timber Prague project, we can plan other eco-friendly timber housing in the Czech Republic and we do not have to limit our investments here, which would otherwise be directed to countries where the construction of taller buildings with timber and hybrid construction is possible."
